Video game tournaments resume on March 31st with a Super Smash Bros Brawl/Soul Calibur IV combo tournament at 10 am. We'll be holding a Hunger Games Party on March 23rd in honor of the movie premiere with games, trivia, door prizes, and a bow-making demonstration. We're also holding a couple of YA classes this month as well. On the 24th, we're having an American Red Cross Babysitting Class, and on the 25th, an American Red Cross CPR Class. The Babysitting Class and the CPR Class are restricted to ages 11-16 and have a small fee of $15 for each class. Scholarships are available, however, so don't let that discourage you. Sign up for the Red Cross classes begins on February 15th and you must register in person.

Library recarpeting project

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JkyGG-rlndE/Ts1E36h7I1I/AAAAAAAAAXY/POActBql4Ck/s320/recarpeting.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5678270432579101522" />

The library is undergoing a complete re-carpeting of the building. During this time, the library has had to put a lot of programs on hold. To make a long story short, there will be no gaming tournament in December. We will, however, still have Nintendo Club on Wednesday nights.

While this may come as bad news to some of you, fear not! We are aiming to make 2012 the best year ever for teens at the Garland County Library. We're already working on creating a great schedule of summer programs as well as brainstorming new program ideas to use throughout the year. One major change that the library plans to make next year is the creation of a teen advisory committee that will work with library staff to make the library more teen-friendly. These are exciting times.

We will update as more information is made available, so stay tuned!

National Gaming Day - November 12th @ 1 pm

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 114px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3JGXWzItvNc/TrGP9Jj9Z8I/AAAAAAAAAW4/3__sWtIUoZ4/s320/NGDtreatments_2011_B_500.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5670471686537701314" />

It's that time of year again. Time for National Gaming Day, brought to you by the American Library Association, FamilyandPartyGames.com, and Demco. The name is misleading, however, because the celebration has crossed the oceans, with participating libraries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. This year, the ALA is setting up a number of inter-library contests, including a Frogger high score contest and a Super Smash Bros Brawl tournament.

The Garland County Library will be celebrating, along with over 1,200 libraries worldwide. We'll have open gaming on the Wii and Xbox 360, an assortment of both euro and classic board games, doorprizes and (hopefully) a big game of The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow. Gamers of all ages are welcome to attend so come by 1427 Malvern Ave. on November 12th!

October happenings

Howdy folks! Fall is here and the Garland County Library has got some good stuff coming up. On October 26th at 7pm, we've got the return of the ever-fun Thriller dance class, brought to you by the good folks at DanceArts Studio. That class is for folks ages 12 and up. If you have any younger sibling, we're also having a class for ages 8-12 at 6 pm. Registration is required for both of these programs.

The very next night, we've got Hot Spring's own The Upshaw Redemption playing a show at 6 pm in the auditorium. They list Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nirvana, Green Day, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sigur Ros, blink-182, and Sum 41 as influences if you're wondering what they're like. Go check 'em out on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/#!/TheUpshawRedemption

Finally, we're getting into the spirit and showing the film Van Helsing on the 29th at 2 pm in honor of Halloween. Free popcorn!

That's all for now, but check back often for more updates.

Mariokart Wii Tournament - Saturday Sept. 17th at 1 pm

We haven't had one of these for a while, so it's time to shake the rust off! June was great, we had a lot of folks at the programs and we've received TONS of review forms. But don't forget that we've got a lot of great stuffed lined up for the rest of the month. Saturday, July 9th, we've got Teen Bingo for Books at 2 pm. We have art classes on July 15th with Dana Fleming, an up-cycling class on the 21st and an origami class on the 28th. All of those classes are at 2pm.

We've got two big programs to close out the summer. On July 23rd, we've got a Super Smash Bros tournament at 2 pm and our ever popular Star Wars Party on the 30th at 2 pm, featuring the fine members of the Arkansas Crimson Nova Squad! The ACNS is the Arkansas affiliate of the 501st Legion, the world's largest Star Wars fan group. It has been a few months since we last visited with the game, but Adam Webb recently caught up with it over in the video game section:

AW: Well, look what the cat dragged in!

SSBB: I know, I know. I was getting a little worried that I was hogging the spotlight, so I thought I would give others a chance to shine. But from what I have heard, that didn't go so well...

AW: That is only a half truth. Sure, Just Dance 2 went over like a lead balloon, but we have had some gaming success since you have been gone.

SSBB: Like what?

AW: ...............

SSBB: Well? How did the Goldeneye tourney go? Or open gaming in January? Did you have a good turnout then, buddy?

AW:................National Gaming Day was pretty cool.

SSBB: Yeah, but was it as good as me? I don't think so. I am not done making my p-

AW: (Closes Super Smash Bros Brawl game box and places back on shelf.)

The tournament will be on April 30th @ 10 am. (501)623-4161 or (501) 922-4483. The library is hosting a series of comic book programs on March 29th, 30th and 31st for kids and young adults from ages 6-17. On March 29th @ 4 pm, we will have "Drawing Comics with Michael Shaeffer" which is open to kids ages 6-11. The class will last one hour and afterward the library will show the DC Animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (rated PG). Then, on the 30th at 4 pm, the library will host "Drawing Comics with Michael Shaeffer" again for young adults ages 12-17. That class will be followed by the movie Green Lantern: First Flight (PG-13).

Last, but certainly not least, Dana Fleming will be teaching a class called "Wonder Wallets!" on the 31st @ 4pm where students will recycle old comic books into a cool and superpowered place to keep your money or, if you're anything like me, a fortress of solitude for that one dollar bill. This class is open to young adults ages 12-17 and will be followed by the film Superman Doomsday (PG-13). All of these programs are registration required and they are filling up faster than a speeding bullet. So do your best Wally West impersonation and call or come by the library to register:

Garland County Library
1427 Malvern Ave
Hot Springs, AR 71901
(501)623-4161 or (501)922-4483

Library Teen Blog is here!

Check back for more info.
